What is aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a system that combines aquaculture, eg. raising tilapia fish, with hydroponics, growing plants in water, in a symbiotic relationship. The fish excrement is broken down by nitrifying bacteria into nitrites and then nitrates that are used by the plant as nutrients. The clean water is then recirculated into the fish farm, aquaculture.
